Remondis, Birtley

Shadbolt Group were commissioned by Northern Construction Solutions Ltd (NCS) to provide civil and structural engineering services for Remondis JBT’s new waste management facility in Birtley.

The facility was to be constructed on an existing site at West Line Industrial Estate, which meant the design was complicated due to poor ground conditions identified during initial site investigation works.

Shadbolt were required to design the steel framework for the new structure to house the new recycling sorting process (framework pictured below).

Due to complex ground conditions, a design solution was required that necessitated the building and part of the floor slabs to be piled.

A standard steel portal frame was designed along with reinforced piled foundation and ground floor slab solutions, externally the new building had to be tied into existing levels and drainage locations. Vehicle tracking was also carried out on the site to ensure that the client’s process, and site traffic would all be able to function adequately on a site that has restricted space.

Construction started early December 2018, with build handover mid-May. The facility is now open and fully operational.
